Guatapé is one of the most colorful and charming towns in Colombia, and it’s just a short trip from Medellín. Known for its vibrant streets and the massive Piedra del Peñol rock, this day trip is a must for anyone visiting the area.

How to Get There
Guatapé is about a 2-hour drive from Medellín. You can get there by:
- Public bus – cheaper, but less flexible
- Private tour – more expensive but also more flexible
We left early in the morning on the public bus to make the most of the day.
Climbing the Piedra del Peñol
The Piedra del Peñol is a giant granite rock rising over 650 feet above the surrounding landscape.
Tips for climbing:
- Wear comfortable shoes — there are over 700 steps!
- Bring water and sunscreen
- The view from the top is incredible — you can see the lakes, islands, and colorful town below
It’s a perfect mix of adventure, exercise, and amazing photography opportunities.



Exploring Guatapé Town
After climbing the rock, take time to wander the colorful streets of Guatapé. The town is famous for its zócalos, the decorative panels on every building.

The town is very walkable, and the charm is in just strolling and soaking in the colors.
